Explanation
Calculation Options control when Excel recalculates formulas.
Automatic
Excel recalculates formulas automatically whenever relevant data changes.
This is the normal mode for most workbooks.
Manual
Excel waits for a recalculation command instead of recalculating every formula immediately.
Manual calculation can be useful for very large or calculation-heavy workbooks.
Calculation Modes
Excel provides:
- Automatic
- Automatic Except Data Tables
- Manual
Recalculation Commands
You can also use:
- Calculate Now
- Calculate Sheet
Example
Suppose:
=B2*C2
If B2 changes from 10 to 20:
Automatic: result updates immediately.
Manual: result may not update until recalculation is performed.
Practice
Create a worksheet with multiple formulas.
- Set calculation to Automatic.
- Change some input values.
- Observe the results.
- Change calculation to Manual.
- Modify the inputs again.
- Recalculate manually.
