Explanation

Before applying Subtotal, the data should normally be sorted by the column you want to group by.

For example, if you want subtotals by City:

Sort City A to Z

Correctly sorted data:

Now Excel can identify the City groups.

Important

Subtotal works best with a normal data range, rather than an Excel Table.

Practice

Sort the practice dataset by:

City → A to Z

Then prepare it for Subtotal.
